FieldMove is a map-based digital field mapping app tailored for geological data capture. The application features a map-centric layout optimized for use on larger touchscreen tablets. It provides drawing tools, including a virtual cursor, enabling precise creation of geological boundaries, fault traces, and various linework on your basemap. Users can also generate simple polygons to represent different rock types.

FieldMove supports Mapbox™ online maps and has the capability to store this extensive online map service for offline use in the field. Moreover, it allows for the import of geo-referenced basemaps in MBTile or GeoTIFF formats, which remain accessible offline during fieldwork.

The application offers functionality to utilize your tablet both as a traditional hand-held bearing compass and a digital compass clinometer for measuring and recording planar and linear feature orientations in the field. Users can capture geo-referenced text notes, photographs, and screenshots directly within the app. FieldMove also includes a library of geological symbols facilitating data plotting on a stereonet for analytical purposes based on field observations and measurements.

All field data readings and digitized linework within FieldMove are fully geo-referenced. This geospatial information is retained when exporting projects in various formats for integration into other applications. The export process is streamlined and user-friendly.

Data can be exported in three different formats: Move™ (.mve) for direct import into Petex's Move software, CSV (.csv) for spreadsheet-like data, and Google Earth (.kmz) for visual representation in mapping applications.

Understanding the Hardware Sensors in Your Device

FieldMove relies on three internal sensors within your device: a magnetometer, gyroscope, and accelerometer. These sensors work in unison to measure planar and linear feature orientations in the field. iPhones and iPads come equipped with all three sensors by default, but not all hardware devices contain them. Before commencing data collection, ensure your device includes all required sensors and that the compass and clinometer provide accurate readings. In instances of sensor uncertainty or when utilizing a traditional hand-held compass clinometer, manual data entry is an option.
